The Verilux HappyLight® Liberty™ 5K is the ideal energy lamp for discreet use at home or the office.
At only about 6″ x 7″ x 3″, it fits easily in a briefcase or backpack and sits inconspicuously on a desk or tabletop.
But don’t let its compact size fool you: It emits 5000 LUX – a good dose for daily use and moderate session times – and a full 50% of what’s available from lamps more than 10 times its size.
Combat seasonal change, the “winter blues” or the effects of shift work, jet lag, malaise or fatigue.
The 5K’s balanced Natural Spectrum illumination taps the potency of light to gently cue your body to recalibrate and stabilize, naturally reducing fatigue and lethargy while improving focus and concentration.
How to use
This model is smaller than other light therapy lamps, so it is comfortable to have on for longer periods of time while you work, read, study, sing or do whatever makes you happy. As an added bonus, it can be packed in a day bag or suitcase to take with you wherever you go.
We typically suggest starting any Happy Light routine with a 10-minute dose and build from there to a time that works best for you. It could be 30 minutes, or it could be an hour or more depending on what makes you feel great. At our office, many leave their Happy Light Liberty Compact Light Therapy Lamp on for a couple hours in the morning while they work away at their desks.
1: Plug It In – Put your Happy Light in a convenient location like on a desk or table top and turn it on.
2: Adjust Your Happy Light – Find a distance and angle that is comfortable for you (make sure the light is facing your eyes, but avoid looking directly into the light).
3: Start With 10 Minutes – We recommend starting with 10 minutes, and then increasing your usage to 30 minutes to 1 hour daily until you find a time that is most effective for you. See the User’s Manual for more info on assembly & customizing your Happy Light usage.
How It works
Our brain’s chemistry and body clock are affected by light, and light stimulates hormones and neurotransmitters that greatly influence our overall feelings of well-being.
Bright light exposure early in the day stimulates our body’s production of serotonin (which improves mood and happiness) and regulates melatonin in the evening (which promotes sleep). Adding a Happy Light to your daily routine allows you to stimulate the production of these important hormones naturally, to keep your body running like clockwork.
How can light therapy help me?
Light therapy is clinically-proven to have many benefits. It may help you if any of these things apply to you:
• Experience seasonal changes in mood (e.g., winter blues)
• Have trouble sleeping
• Have an irregular sleep schedule or do shift work
• Spend a lot of time indoors and can’t get 30 minutes of sunshine a day
• Experience fatigue
• Have trouble concentrating
• Seek a balanced lifestyle with drug-free natural solutions
What makes a Happy Light different from an ordinary lamp?
Bright light therapy has been studied extensively since the early 1980s and has clinically-proven effects on mood, energy, focus & sleep.
Though the bulb in the Happy Light looks like a regular bulb, Happy Light therapy lamps are uniquely designed with a special ballast to ensure a lux measurement (or light intensity) far greater than an ordinary lamp.
It is the amount of lux – and brightness of the lamp – that makes the Happy Light effective
When in the day should I use my Happy Light?
Happy Light mimics morning sunlight, so it’s best to use your Happy Light before noon. It’s not recommended to use it for an extended period of time in the afternoon or evening because bright light suppresses melatonin (the sleep hormone) and may interfere with your sleep.
However, it is okay to use it briefly in the afternoon (for 10-15 minutes) for a quick pick-me-up.
For light therapy to work, you need to use it daily, so it’s best to use your Happy Light while doing another activity already built into your daily routine – like eating breakfast, working, reading, checking emails, watching TV, etc.
How should I position my Happy Light?
The light needs to enter directly into your eyes. Generally, a good position is on a desk or table at 10 o’clock or 2 o’clock. You can even position slightly higher than your eyes to mimic the angle of sunlight. Just like the sun, you don’t want to stare directly at your Happy Light, but you do need to be able to see it.
You also want to find a comfortable distance from the light. The closer the light is to you, the shorter the amount of time you will need to use the light to receive its full benefits. Many people leave their Happy Light at a distance of up to 2 feet and on for an hour or more while they work.
Just keep in mind that the farther you move it away, the longer you’ll need to use the light to feel its benefits. Think… closer = shorter time; farther = longer time.
Can I wear glasses while using my Happy Light?
Yes, you can keep your glasses on. Glasses are fine to wear as long as they are not tinted. Tinted glasses would cause less light to reach your eyes, and the light from the Happy Light needs to reach your eyes to work.
How can I tell if I’m getting too much light from my Happy Light?
Light therapy has stimulating effects to enhance mood, energy & focus. If you feel a little jittery (e.g. like you’ve had too much caffeine), then you’ll want to cut back on the amount of time you use your Happy Light.
You can also increase your distance from the light. Both will help you cut back on your light intake and help you find a routine that feels just right.
